How Long Does it Take to Hike Gold Strike Hot Springs Trail?
The time is going to vary for each person.
It took about 5 hours for us to complete the trail, including the 30 minutes or so that we hung out at the hot springs.
How Difficult is the Gold Strike Hot Springs Trail?
This trail is definitely not for beginners and should not be done alone. There are numerous rope climbs (20 feet) and quite a few areas where you will be climbing up, down and across large boulders.
Things to Avoid on the Gold Strike Trail
- Be aware of snakes and other critters. I did not see anything in particular on our hike, but snakes have been known to be seen and rattlesnakes are common in Vegas.
- Take your time. Some of the areas on the trail can be very dangerous, so don’t rush anything to ensure you are doing it in the most safe manner.
- Naegleria Fowleri (a brain eating infection) has been found in the water on the trail and in the hot springs, but is not common. It is recommended to keep your head out of the water to avoid it (it typically enters through your nasal passage from the water).
- Dehydration! Make sure you bring PLENTY of water – you will need it! A backpack will be handy to keep your snacks and water in, but make sure it’s not too heavy so you aren’t carrying any unnecessary baggage throughout the trail.
- Leaving trash behind. Please respect the trail, other hikers, and the critters that live there and bring any trash you brought back with you.
- Hiking when it’s too hot (particularly the summertime) – many deaths on the trail have been from heat strokes. The same goes for hiking during rainy seasons to avoid getting flooded out (and slippery footing).
- Cutting it close on time. Give yourself at least 6 hours total (round trip) to complete the entire trail. It took us 5 hours as novices (with TONS of help from our fitness coaches)
How Many Calories Can You Burn Hiking This Trail?
When I hiked it, as a 5’6″ 150lb woman, I burned over 2,000 calories. You can see the activity levels below. There are 2 reports, because we stopped at the hot springs and picked back up at 10:50am to head back.
